An urban bioclimatic analysis tool

Most of the existing software do not directly connect to the outdoor human comfort. There are various limitations in the existing programs, such as, scale of simulation, accuracy in result, user-friendly interface and duration of calculation time. Regarding these limitations, the idea of developing OTC Model, was emerged to assist designers and researchers to address specific consideration since initial design and research phase. OTC Model provides a comprehensive solution for sustainable analysis in one platform and a wide range of analysis functionality. It is capable of various tasks, including to analyze urban texture, calculate sunlight hours and shadow range, outdoor thermal and wind comfort, estimate optimal building orientation and building energy consumption. OTC Model was developed for modeling urban climate such as solar flex, mean radiant temperature, surface temperature, urban wind flow, thermal comfort indices. These indices were calculated to assess the relationship between meteorological, environmental and personal variables, and also study how this relationship affects human health and activities. Results of analyses are presented in a graphical format for easy interpretation.

Thermal Comfort

OTC Model calculates a wide range of outdoor thermal comfort indices including Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET), and Universal Effective Temperature (ETU) to evaluate effect of micro-climate on comfort.

Wind Comfort

A wind comfort analysis assesses the comfortability and degree of safety around the buildings. Wind comfort studies consists of combining statistical meteorological data, aerodynamic information and a comfort criterion.

Sunlight Hours

OTC Model can be used to visualize how many hours of sunlight will fall on a given surface of model.

Energy Consumption

OTC Model analysis the effects of urban layout on urban energy system.

Shadow Range

Shadow range diagrams, also known as butterfly diagrams, are a simple way to visualize the shadows that occur over a range of times for a given period.

Building Orientation

OTC Model Analysis provide a great tool for an estimate optimal building orientation.

Installation and Starting

OTC Model® was developed for modeling urban climate. It is available as a stand-alone application using Matlab Compiler on PC (Windows) platforms. The following descriptions explain how to set up the program. The Interface runs under WINDOWS XP/Vista/7/8 64-bit platforms. OTC Model® is freeware, but not free software. Personal, educational and professional use is allowed.

 

1. Install the MCR (MATLAB Compiler Runtime). This can be downloaded from the Mathworks webpage.(http://www.mathworks.de/products/compiler/mcr/index.html)

1.1. You can go to the second section If you already have MCR 8.1 installed. You can check which version of MCR you have by writing "mcrversion" at the MATLAB prompt. 

1.2. Please select the Windows version of MCR (R2013a - Windows 64-bit).

 

2. Download OTC_Model_1_4_0_64bit.zip (Compress file) from Download page of OTCmodel.com

2.1. The download link is at the bottom of this page.

 

3. Unpack the downloaded zip file.

 3.1. Decompress the downloaded file (*.zip) using an appropriate archive manager. We recommend using "WinRaR"  www.rarlab.com  or "WinZip" www.winzip.com.

 

Starting program

1. Open "OTC_Model_1_4_0_64bit" directory where the program files were located.

2. Double click on the file "OTC_Model_1_4_0_64bit.exe".

3. After clicking the exe, it takes from 60 - 120 seconds to appear.
